The newest portable navigation system we reviewed from Mio Technology is not so well in our tests. It is a pity, because the Mio C220 had a lot going for it – affordable price, good performance, compact design – but its screen is a complete washout. Fortunately, the last of millions of GPS, the Mio C520 offers a better experience and packs even more features at a wallet $ 399 MAP price. For the money, you get a large 4.3 inch touch screen, integrated Bluetooth, multimedia capabilities, and precise instructions. It is certainly a better value than the Magellan Maestro 3100. That said, C520 has its downfalls: the Bluetooth integration is limited, and real-time monitoring and route recalculations could be better. If navigation and usability is the most important to you, and you can find a good deal on the Garmin Nuvi, you better with that device in place.
Design
The Mio C520 is one of the best looking portable navigation systems we've ever seen. The charcoal gray and silver color is attractive, but more attractive is the thinness of the device. At just 4.9 inches wide by 3.2 inches by 0.8 inches deep and weighing 6.7 ounces, is extremely soft, so that all multimedia files compatible GPS models we have tested, the Mio C520 is one we almost consider using as a portable media player – almost (see below).
Also beauty in the simplicity of design. Apart from a button on the top of the camera, no external controls other that saturate the device. Instead, all functions and text are entered through the C520 large touch screen of 4.3 inches. It displays 65,000 colors at a resolution 480×272 pixels, which makes maps and images are vibrant and sharp text. In addition, to our relief, I could still read in the light screen C520 the sun, unlike the Mio C220 screen is washed to become unreadable. We always like to have a brightness and contrast of the cards a little more, but Again it was a good experience improved over the C220. Note that some address and POI listings are hard to read because the font size is quite small.
The interface and menu system are easy to use, with icons clearly marked and bubbly. For most, I could use it without having to crack open the manual, but things get a little less intuitive as you dig deeper into applications. For example, a number of tabs at the map screen open and hide various navigation tools require some time to learn and master. In addition, some controls media player are difficult to discern since their functions are not identified. On a more positive note, thank you for the larger screen, the keyboard is easier to use that the C220, and is also in QWERTY format, so you get the design and feel of your computer keyboard. Moreover, as Magellan's GPS devices, the keyboard C520 has a predictive function, which will be gray Z. or figures that do not match street names or numbers that start entering an address.
Among other referred to an external antenna port and speaker in the rear, and a mini USB port and power connector to 18 pins on the bottom. There is also an expansion slot SD and 2.5mm jack for headphones in the left column. We're a little surprised and disappointed that the C520 is not equipped with a headphone jack 3.5 mm for better multimedia experience.
The Mio C520 comes with a car charger, AC adapter, a vehicle mount (windshield and instrument board), a USB cable, and material reference. The windshield is a very good job holding the camera up, but we think the cradle was a bit plasticky and cheap, to take extra precautions for assembly and disassembly of the system.
Features
The Mio C520 is equipped with a 20-channel GPS chip and comes SiRFIII TeleAtlas maps of North America and 6 million points of interest. The basic navigation features are similar to the C710. The system can create directions by the fastest, the shortest route or most economical, with no roads or toll roads, highways, u-turns, and so on, and in several ways, including Cars, bicycles and pedestrians. Among other good things to recalculate the route, 2D and 3D map views with day and night colors, simulations of the road and alerts radar. You can get read our Mio C710 review for a more detailed description of the Mio navigation system, but for this review, we focus in some unique and new, for the C520.
One nice feature is the addition of text to speech features. This means the Mio C520 will now speak street names, so you pay more attention to the road rather than the map screen, because you get more audio system accurate. Also have your choice of 14 languages and voices, but you can get directions, text to speech in English. To complete the voice instructions, a new view split screen that displays various information about your trip. You can scroll through several views that give you the distance and direction of next turn, a list of upcoming turns, nearby gas stations, currently estimated time of arrival, speed, and more. There is an option to completely hide the window actually if you find it too hard and just want to rely on the map and voice messages.
With integrated Bluetooth, you can use the Mio C520 as a speaker for your phone Bluetooth handsfree phone or smartphone to receive and make calls. For outgoing calls, can use the keyboard on the screen or select a contact from the guide telephone device. Also, if a POI has a number indicated, there is an option to call directly to that activity. Unfortunately, you can not transfer contacts wirelessly from your mobile address book C520, and call history synchronization is not available on all phones. (See for better performance.) Bono A beautiful and unexpected, that the unit works with Bluetooth stereo headsets (A2DP profile).
The Mio C520 media player is the base (if you get equalizer settings and playlist creation) and as mentioned above, the interface is somewhat confusing and stripped. However, you can learn to work with the player, the biggest problem is that the system does not always work with all supported formats load. Mio says the C520 can play MP3, WMA, WAV, WMV, AVI, MP4 music and video, but we have not been able to see any AVI WMV o. Mio includes Ulead video conversion software, however. It is clear that most important function of this device is its navigation tools, but with clean design and big screen, we might from time to time with the C520 as a portable video player, so the limited support is disappointing.
Performance
We tested the Mio C520 in San Francisco, and from a cold start, it took about three minutes to get a satellite solution under a cloudy sky. starts after take from seconds to two minutes, but a Once locked, the GPS receiver did a good job of holding the signal as we drove through the city. We note, however, that the system was about half a block behind us when tracking our location. We also entered our standard trip from the Navy in the host city of CNET, and the C520 quickly returned with precise instructions. The text to speech instructions are useful and detailed voice, the voices of women was a bit robotic, but if we had no problem to understand. He also missed several turns to test the rate of route calculation, and while the system Quick to give us a new route and accurate, but not I find it very effective. There were times when I knew a more direct way than recommended by the C520, but if you are totally new to an area, the C520 can be a lifesaver, returning on the right path to your destination.
For Bluetooth, connected the Mio C520 with the Palm Treo 755p and HTC S710 smart phones. We had no problems with the pairing process, and we could make and receive calls. But we could not synchronize our call list from any phone. Multimedia performance was mixed. Music playback through the speakers was surprisingly unit well with a lot of volume and richness, but again, we wish the C520 had a 3.5mm jack to connect a good pair of headphones. Watching an MP4 video clip was less than satisfactory experience, as images often looked pixilated. The Mio C520 1300mAh lithium-ion battery is rated for up to 4.5 hours of GPS use and up 8.5 hours of MP3 playback with the backlight.
