TomTom, Magellin, or Garmin: Which GPS navigation system company has FREE or CHEAP map updates?
Between the 3 big ones: Magellan, Tom Tom, and Garmin. I want up-to-date maps, but I’m not willing to pay a subscription fee.
You have to understand that the GPS manufacturer doesn’t create or update the maps in their products. They contract with another service, like NavTeq or Tele Atlas. The mapping company provides the map data (and produces the updates); the GPS manufacturer just makes the GPS device using the data provided by the mapping company.
The GPS manufacturer has to pay the mapping service for the map data. That price is incorporated into the price you pay for the product. Once you’ve bought it, though, the GPS manufacturer isn’t making any more money from you, so there’s no incentive for them to give you future map updates at no charge (after all, they have to pay for them). They can’t provide a free service that costs them money, and expect to stay in business. If they’re going to allow future map updates, they have to include that cost in the initial price of the GPS unit, which means they won’t sell as many because most GPS shoppers are looking for the lowest price.
