Best GPS – How do you tell?
Finding the best GPS system is like buying the perfect car. Everything is relative – For You! The perfect car for me would be able to survive two children stir it, a dog, two cats, at times, and a woman who is consistently up trash (Oh, sorry, they are called collectibles) on the side of the road. It would be spacious and maintenance free. For someone else, the ideal vehicle would need only two seats, one above rag, and be able to do 120 mph easily.
To find the best GPS system, you must first understand what they usually do and what are the usual features, we must define what it wants to.
For GPS systems, I am particularly talking about the range of vehicles from post-sale. You know, the kind you see sitting on the windscreen people in the grocery store. I'm not talking about dashboard type that come with the car, I am not given the change that the varieties would take a long walk. The post-trade systems are called portable GPS receivers, or systems, and this I will call here.
Basically, all of these handheld GPS receivers do exactly the same. It shows where you are in an electronic card, and they tell you how to get where you want to go, either on the street or somewhere in the country.
All GPS systems work off the same network of satellites encircling the earth, and most laptops, even those that use the same type of receptors. Therefore, the differences between brands and models are not in the way they work or what they do, basically, but the bells and whistles that go with it.
Virtually GPS systems come with the following:
* Speech to tell you where to go
* Touch screen
* Large Data Base "Points of Interest (Locations of hospitals, ATMs, McDonald's, etc)
* Election Map 2D and 3D "bird's eye" views
* Calculation Automatic route
* Choose between the shortest and fastest routes
* Comes preloaded with maps of 48 states
Optional features leading to consider when buying a GPS system are:
* Is he actually said the names of the street, you should activate as you approach it?
* Do you need a widescreen version (4.3 inches diagonal rather than 3.5 inches)?
* Do you need maps of Canada, Mexico or Europe?
* Is the support of Bluetooth, which lets you use your GPS on your mobile phone for hands-free calling? (This is essentially a windshield mounted in the version heard little clips of people walking by.)
* Can enter multiple unit tracks and calculates the best route to reach each of them? Let's say in a strange city and want to go to the cleaners, grocery store, movie theater, a local dentist and all in one trip. GPS system may to calculate the shortest route possible to reach all these?
* Does the real-time traffic and weather monitoring capabilities and can use this information to bypass traffic again?
* Can I use the device for listening to music (MP3) or view digital photos?
* What is the size Points of interest?
There are some other features that include major manufacturers. Magellan, for example, has been AAA provide contact information on the current GPS Tourguide itself. Tom Tom has this unique feature where users can make changes and upload map of these computer databases TomTom available to everyone. And Garmin comes out with a new unit in 2008 to learn to recognize your voice so you can enter commands speaking instead of typing on the touch screen.
Thus, in order to find the best GPS device for you, you must first decide which of these features optional are mandatory, and would like if you can afford.
You can get a GPS system for under $ 200. The Garmin Nuvi 200, for example, has all the basic features listed above. It comes preloaded with regional maps (not all U.S.). If you want to spend a little more about how the Tom Tom One, 3rd edition, which at the time of writing (early '08) costs just under $ 200 at Amazon and comes with the ability of real time traffic MapShare and Tom Tom (where you can change transferred).
Virtually all of Magellan Maestro series is currently in the range of $ 200 and $ 400. You can get more Basic 3210 for about $ 250, which has millions of points of interest and, of course, the AAA TourBook, or you can spend about $ 100 more and get the 4250, that includes everything that makes and 3210 adds Bluetooth, voice recognition and real-time traffic.
One of the most popular units is the Garmin Nuvi 350, which does all the nuvi 200 does, but includes Garmin "Travel Kit" viewer MP3 compatibility, photography, world travel clock, calendar and more.
The decision can be difficult, but not to buy one, though! GPS system is great. Once you have your first, you'll wonder how you get on the world without it.
